Literacy

28-07-2022

Literacy development in the EYFS focuses on laying the groundwork for young children to become confident readers and writers. Three key components, Comprehension, Reading, and Writing, are central to this process, helping children develop essential literacy skills.

  1. Comprehension: Children begin to understand and enjoy stories, poems, and rhymes. They learn to follow narratives, predict what happens next, and answer questions about what they have heard. Developing comprehension skills helps children make sense of the world around them and build a stronger foundation for reading.
  2. Reading: Children are introduced to early reading through activities like phonics, where they learn the sounds of letters and how to blend them to read simple words.
  3. Writing: Writing skills are nurtured by encouraging children to make marks, draw, and eventually form letters and words. They learn how to write their names, from simple sentences, and use their growing understanding of phonics to spell words.

Through comprehension, reading, and writing, children develop essential literacy skills that are the foundation for their future learning. These skills help foster a love of books, promote independent thinking, and support effective communication.
